Turkey Salisbury Steak

Turkey Salisbury Steak

I made Turkey Salisbury Steak. Sacrilege, I know. But, you most likely won't even notice because I made these the very same way I would do a regular beef Salisbury steak. Just as delicious with less fat and calories than the beef version. Who knows, you might even like this better than the original!

Main Ingredients Needed

You're going to need a lot of the same ingredients needed for a traditional Salisbury Steak Recipe minus the beef! Here's what you'll need:

  • Ground Turkey –I bought mine from Costco but any ground turkey brand will do. Turkey contains a lot less fat than its beef counterpart.
  • Breadcrumbs –these are just
  • Onions –for a subtle onion flavor!
  • Egg –this is used as a binder to the rest of the ingredients.
  • Ketchup –used for moisture and flavor.
  • Ground Mustard –for its tangy and pungent flavor.
  • Garlic Salt –for seasoning and slight garlic flavor.
  • Salt and Pepper –don't skip out on these two, they are essential for good tasting food.
  • Olive Oil –this is used to brown the turkey steaks and mushrooms.

How to Make Turkey Salisbury Steak

Making these turkey Salisbury steaks is so easy with mouthwatering results. Here's how to make it:

  1. Start by mixing all the turkey Salisbury steak ingredients together. Stir it up really well and then form into little mini loaves or patties.
  2. Brown them off in a little olive oil. They won't be cooked all the way through and that's just fine because they'll finish cooking in the gravy. Set these aside.
  3. Now you can brown off some onions and mushrooms in that same pan. This should take maybe 5 minutes or so. Pull these guys out too.

Mushroom Gravy

The last thing to do is make the gravy. Here's how to make it, and for full details see the recipe card below!

  1. Make a roux with flour and butter, whisk in some beef stock and finish with a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Add in the par-cooked turkey steaks and the cooked mushrooms. Cover and simmer until gravy has thickened and meat is cooked thoroughly.
  3. Mentally prepare yourself for delicious food and then serve as you like!

Side Dishes

Gord and I loved this meal, and so did Brooke surprisingly {minus the mushrooms}.  I served this over riced cauliflower, but traditional mashed potatoes would probably be even better. Here are a couple of other tasty ideas:

  • Mashed Sweet Potatoes – this goes along with the comforting aspect of the dish and is perfect to eat with leftover gravy.
  • Roasted Asparagus – this is a healthier option that can be baked in the oven while the turkey Salisbury steaks are cooking away. Top with a little parmesan, salt, and pepper.
  • Potato Rolls or Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls – consider some carbs to eat alongside this meaty dish. Spread soft butter over warm rolls and scoop up some of the gravy while you're at it.

Gosh, I love food!

Leftovers

Any leftovers can be stored in the fridge, covered, for up to 3 days. The gravy keeps everything moist so this Turkey Salisbury Steak recipe is perfect for meal prep.

Salisbury Steak got a healthy upgrade with this Turkey Salisbury Steak Recipe. Less fat and calories than the beef version but just as good!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil divided
  • 1/2 cup diced onion divided
  • 8 oz sliced mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all purpose flour heaping tablespoon
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • dash Worcestershire

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, stir turkey, egg, breadcrumbs, half the diced onion, ketchup and spices together until combined. Form 6-7 patties and brown both sides in 1 tablespoons olive oil in large, deep skillet. Remove from pan and set aside. Patties will not be cooked completely and that's totally ok!

  • Pour in remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil into skillet. Saute last of the onions and mushrooms until browned and tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.

  • Melt tablespoon of butter into pan. Sprinkle in flour and whisk to form a paste. It might seem to form crumbs because it's a little dry; that's ok! Slowly whisk in beef broth to avoid lumps. Bring to boil to thicken, then reduce heat to simmer. Pour in Worcestershire sauce. Slide in browned turkey steaks and spoon sauce over to coat. Add in cooked mushrooms and onions overtop and cover. Simmer 10 minutes or until gravy thickens even more and turkey steaks and cooked thoroughly.

  • Serve over mashed potatoes {or in my case, riced cauliflower}.
